Pros and Cons Of A Cavachon

6 Helpful Pros And Cons Of A Cavachon You Need To Know

The Cavachon is an adorable dog with lots of great qualities. This type of ‘designer dog’ or ‘mixed-breed dog’ has grown in popularity in recent years due to its adorable appearance and fun personality.

However, while there are benefits to owning a Cavachon, it’s worth considering both the pros and cons of the Cavachon before committing to owning one.

With that question in mind, I set about doing some research to learn more.

The main advantages of a Cavachon are the low-shed hypoallergenic coat, better overall health, and unique appearance.

The main disadvantages of a Cavachon are their unpredictable size, unpredictable appearance, and unpredictable health issues.

Let’s look at each of these advantages and disadvantages in more detail in the rest of this article.

What Is A Cavachon?

A Cavachon is a breed of dog. It is a cross between a Bichon Frise and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

As it is a crossbreed, the Cavachon can inherit some or all of the traits of its parents.

For instance, the Cavachon inherits the low-shed coat of the Bichon Frise, making it a hypoallergenic dog breed.

On the other hand, the Cavachon could also inherit the potential heart issues associated with the Cavalier King Charles.

Although not a registered breed according to the American Kennel Club, this type of dog has become extremely popular in recent years.

Some other examples of popular mix-breed dogs include:

  • The Poochon – Poodle, Bichon Frise Mix
  • The Cocka Poo – Cocker Spaniel, Poodle Mix
  • The Yorkie Bichon – Yorkshire Terrier, Bichon Frise Mix

Advantages Of A Cavachon

Let’s start off by looking at the advantages of a Cavachon:

1 Cavachons Have A Low Shed Hypoallergenic Coat

As we’ve already mentioned, the Cavachon is a cross between a Bichon Frise and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

With that in mind, the Cavachon generally inherits the low-shed coat of the Bichon Frise.

This is a positive trait for a dog like the Cavachon to have as it means they are generally good for people that suffer from allergies.

What’s more, the low-shed nature of their coat means you won’t find dog hair all over your house that constantly needs to be vacuumed.

2 Cavachons Have Better Overall Health

As is the case with most crossbreed dogs, the Cavachon is unlikely to inherit the health issues of their parents.

Although this can’t be said for certain, Cavachons are less likely to inherit the heart problems sometimes experienced by the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or the allergies that sometimes affect the Bichon Frise.

3 Cavachons Have A Unique Appearance

Cavachons have a unique appearance when compared to their parents. They can look different even amongst their siblings in the same litter.

This variation in appearance creates a unique-looking dog that people are very much drawn to.

Disadvantages Of A Cavachon

Next, let’s focus on the disadvantages of a Cavachon:

1 Cavachons Can Be An Unpredictable Size

Because the Cavachon is a relatively new breed when compared to the likes of the Bichon Frise for instance, this means Cavachons can differ wildly in size.

We don’t know enough about the Cavachon yet to accurately predict how big they’ll be. There are some conservative measurements but because the Cavachon isn’t a purebreed dog they don’t specifically have to match ‘breed regulations’ in terms of their size.

As a personal example, my mother became the proud owner of a Cavachon puppy thinking she would grow to be the size of the small Bichon Frise I own. However, much to our surprise, that Cavachon now towers over my Bichon and can even reach the kitchen countertops to swipe everyone’s dinners!

2 Cavachons Can Have An Unpredictable Appearance

Following on from being an unpredictable size, the Cavachon can also have an unpredictable appearance.

As the Cavachon isn’t a purepred dog, there are no specific traits or attributes they should have. With this in mind, one litter of Cavachons can look very different from another depending on their parents.

3 Cavachons Can Have Unpredictable Health Issues

We do know the potential health issues the Bichon or Cavalier could have, so we can look out for signs of these in the resulting Cavachon.

However, it’s not possible to predict the potential health issues of the Cavachon as they are a relatively new dog breed.

It’s possible they could develop new health issues as the breed continues to evolve over time.

Regular check-ups at the Vets are an important part of any responsible dog owner’s checklist to keep on top of this.

Conclusion

It’s important to consider the pros and cons of a Cavachon before you make the decision to own one for yourself.
